I am so sad to see that "Providence" Baptist has strayed so far from God's Word to hire a woman as a pastor:

"But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet" (I Tim 2:12).

How can God shed His blessing on a church that is going directly against His stated will? Please, I urge you to study the context of the Scripture too, in the Greek--God's plan is for men to lead. I pray that you will rethink (and repent of) this decision.

I'm not against Julie--I'm for her. I'm against the role she's been given in the church. How sad.

I am glad that Jen reads our site and I hope she continues to do so. I think she needs to understand that the Bible is not an ecclesiastical civil code and that Paul's statement to Timothy was practical advice in a local situation not a universal command. If it so, then why do we have the axample of Priscilla and Aquila or the judge Deborah? Did Deborah go against God's stated will--or was leadership by women o.k. in the Old Testament? I would be interested to know if she believes in baptizing for the dead, as Paul mentions in I Cor. 15? If not, why not, given her endorsement of a practical matter at the time as a universally truth? And does she greet people in the church with a "holy kiss"? If she understands just the NT as a collection of commands (with the OT being for the Jews or the dispensation of law), I would assume she obeys this warm and tender directive. If she does not, I would call for her repentance. But, since she says she is for Julie, I would prose that she visit the church after Julie comes, get acquainted with her, and share the concern she has with her. Perhaps Jen might have her horizons enlarged and choose to become part of our growing community. She will always be welcome here.

It saddened me to read the note from this Jen. Were it not for the women in our Baptist churches for all these many years - we would not have the converts to Christ that we have had. I see I need to pray that this woman opens her heart to Christ for truth, wisdom and a loving heart! I only found the site looking for Julie's addrss and came across the remarks by Jan. It really, really surprised me - especially since she has not bothered to come hear Julie preach. I'm glad the church I was baptised in more than 50 years ago did not have this type of thinking - and it was and still is SOUTHERN BAPTIST! May God continue to bless Julie and Providence Baptist Church. Linda

      Amen Linda!!
I am so thankful for Christians who understand that God calls whom he will for his service and ministry. I also am thankful that I was nurtured in my Christian faith, from birth, in a church (also Southern Baptist) that taught me that God loves me and wants me to serve him. When this church began to ordain female deacons in the 1960's, it was celebrated, not as a gender issue, but that new deacons were being called out for God's service.
I also want to extend a warm welcome to everyone to come worship at Providence Baptist Church.
